Bedroom ideas: calm colors and a hotel feel

A good bedroom is less about trends and more about calm: muted colors, an inviting bed and light you can dim. These are the moves that do the most for sleep and mood – even in a small bedroom.

Calming bedroom colors

Choose low-saturation colors with a touch of grey. Muted green, greige, warm white and deep blue feel calm in both daylight and evening light. Strong warm colors like bright red and yellow add more energy than you want at bedtime.

A safe move is painting only the wall behind the bed a deeper shade and keeping the rest light. You get depth without shrinking the room.

A hotel-style bed

Hotel beds feel luxurious because they are layered and symmetrical, not because they are expensive. You need few items, in the right order.

  1. 1Start with white or light bedding in linen or percale.
  2. 2Fold the top of the duvet down by about a third.
  3. 3Lay a bedspread or throw across the bottom third of the bed.
  4. 4Two sleeping pillows at the back, two decorative in front – one extra in the middle at most.
  5. 5An upholstered or wooden headboard frames the bed as the focal point.
  6. 6Matching bedside tables and lamps on both sides create symmetry.

Lighting and blackout

The bedroom needs little overhead light and more low, warm light. Use bedside lamps at 2700 K or below, ideally dimmable. A bright ceiling light alone makes the room flat and cold.

Floor-to-ceiling linen curtains combined with a blackout blind give both calm and better sleep in bright summers. See more bedroom ideas.

Small bedroom: layout and storage

In a small bedroom, place the headboard against the longest wall without a window, leaving space on both sides if possible. At least 60 cm of clear walkway keeps the room usable.

Use the height: tall wardrobes painted the wall color visually disappear, and a bed with drawers frees up floor space.

  • Wall-mounted lamps instead of table lamps save bedside space
  • A mirror on the wardrobe door adds light and space
  • Keep the floor clear – it makes the room look bigger

Textiles and rugs

A rug under the bed should extend at least 50–60 cm on each side so your feet land somewhere warm. Under a double bed, 200×300 cm works best. Mix wool, linen and knits in one color family for depth without clutter. See guest room inspiration.
