The order that gives the most for your money

Start with the largest surface areas and work down in size. That way you avoid buying decor that doesn't fit the whole.

1Textiles: rug, floor-to-ceiling curtains, one throw.
2Light: warm 2700 K bulbs and one extra light source per zone.
3Cushions: 2–3 per sofa section, varied texture, shared palette.
4Wall: one large piece instead of several small ones.
5Coffee table: a book, a bowl, a candle and one organic shape on a tray.
6Green: one large plant beats five small ones.

Set aside one afternoon for steps 1–3; they give the most visible effect.
Never buy decor before the palette is decided.

The cushion mix: texture before pattern

Stick to a maximum of three colours and let texture do the work: bouclé, linen, velvet and knit together look more expensive than five patterns in the same palette.

Art: one large surface beats a gallery wall

One piece covering 60–75 % of the sofa's width creates calm. Hang the lower edge 20–25 cm above the sofa back. Gallery walls need tight spacing and one frame family to avoid looking messy.

One large plant, not five small ones
